It’s a New Year. It’s a New Century. It’s a New Millennium…officially… It’s a New Time in our Lives… A New Page has been turned. Yet, I have the Tendency to go back and pull a Movie Title that was popular in the 1960s or ‘70s. I remember going to the local movie theatre in Mendota, Illinois, my town of birth and seeing “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It was colossal. It was magnificent. It was a movie you would watch, wide-eyed in total amazement… even without popcorn and soda to accompany it! Accordingly, at that time, the Film was to portray what was to come in the New Millennium, as some Futurists were predicting what was to be. There would be Colonies built all over the Star-spattered Universe…or something like that. I honestly forgot what the plot was about, but always being into by-lines and catchy titles and groovy special effects, the Name alone stuck in my mind and now rears its colorful head in today’s Column. The Odyssey today is not in the Race for Outer Space Control and Conquer but for Inner Space Peace, Quiet and Tranquility. It continues down another avenue with the Race for Realtors to swipe up the virgin and prime land (where location means; LOCATION) and build an assortment of either Corporate Skyscrapers or Housing Developments. Life, as We know it, has become a perplexing double-edged sword. Q: Where is Nature going to go? Q: Will Nature continue to flourish or will it be cemented over with brick and mortar; glass and tar? I wish I knew thirty years ago that I would be(come) a ‘Combative Writer’ penning this Column today, possessed and blessed with a HOVO: Highly Opinionated Valued Opinion, as I would have started to save facts and statistics about land, land mass and population explosions throughout the decades since this Film debuted. I can only say through common sense knowledge that land grows scantier and more deplenished as more people take over. Abuse and Misuse seem to have been utilized moreso than proper and careful “Use.” Books and magazine stories have been written and rewritten about this subject. Civic Groups across the Globe have already been formed to seriously look at this Problem and Social Issue. However, I strongly feel that it is the minute “Random Acts of Environmental/Eco-Actions may be undertaken by each of us EVERY Day so that our Planet continues in a healthy state for ourselves and future generations. The word “minute” is systematically used here for its dual meanings. Although the litter may be “minute,” it is still categorized as waste and must be properly removed and discarded. As a Reality Check, it only takes a “minute” of time to do this Action Activity. For all the time that is wasted in a Person’s Day, there is no reason why everyone can not participate in this quick and easy, yet honorable Program. Therefore, what I profess for anyone’s New Year’s Resolutions are not to necessarily: 1. Lose weight and get “fit” 2. Keep a tidier homestead 3. Mingle more 4. Exercise on a regular basis and/or 5. Eat more healthily and wisely which, undisputedly, are great Themes to stick to, but realistically are the top Resolutions broken by Day 11 of the New Year. What I suggest is that every Day, People perform their own Anti-Litter Campaign. It does not take much Time and Effort to pick up a styrofoam cup or a piece of paper and throw it in a garbage bin found in an alley or to stuff it in a plastic bag that you can begin carrying along with you, specifically for this task. Not only are you keeping (y)our Environment - (y)our Planet - (y)our only Home cleaner…but you are Exercising. Moving, bending down and picking up litter or debris is, literally “good for you” - not only for Nature. It indeed is a win-win situation for all concerned about the Health and Wealth of the Land. That may be the healthiest and most popular Resolution any of us can make. For the hard-core Statistics that are circulating these Days of our Lives in the 21ST Century that talk about the brazen and deteriorating Earthly Conditions our Planet is in, it is up to us individually (one-by-one, person-by-person; adult-by-adult and child-by-child) to take it into our own hands and pick-up the mess that’s been laid before us. I guarantee that in a relatively short period of time, the Wonders of a Collective Action as this will be monumental and something that all of us can do no matter where We live or in what language We speak. After all, the Bottom Line is: We are part of The 21ST Century…this new and exciting Era…our Legacy is one that We would want our Ancestors to be proud of. Starting Today will make our Tomorrows much cleaner, brighter and one where We can all be prouder than pie! 2001: A Space Odyssey…it’s a nice title. Today, it has been revised to create a New and (much) Improved Lifestyle. As a Campaign to mobilize the Masses for our Land Masses, it’s even better still! 2001: A Space Odyssey…Let’s live up to its Glory.
